Abuja | Media Report
A prominent broadcaster with Channels Television, Seun Okinbaloye, has declared that he will not be intimidated following controversial remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The controversy erupted after Wike allegedly stated that he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” Okinbaloye over the journalist’s comments warning against the dangers of a one-party system in Nigeria.

The remark has drawn widespread criticism, with Amnesty International condemning the statement as “reckless and violent,” and calling for more responsible public discourse.

Reacting on Sunday, Okinbaloye reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values and rejected any form of intimidation.

“The fact remains that our democracy is in danger if we allow one-way traffic in balloting,” he said.

He emphasized that his concerns were not targeted at any specific political group but were meant as a broader warning to Nigerians about safeguarding democratic principles.

“This is not a warning to the opposition or ruling party, but to all Nigerians who believe in the development of our nation,” he added.

Okinbaloye also disclosed that the FCT Minister later reached out to him, clarifying that his comments were not intended in the manner they were perceived.

While acknowledging the clarification, the journalist stressed that threats or violent rhetoric must never be normalized in a democratic society.

“Let me be clear: I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated,” he stated.

He further underscored the role of dissent in strengthening democracy, noting that disagreement should never escalate into hostility or violence.

“We may disagree and as humans we may err, but dissent must never descend into hostility or harm. I will continue to do what I love asking the necessary questions and holding power to account.”

The incident has reignited conversations about press freedom, political tolerance, and the importance of responsible leadership in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
