As part of its constitutional oversight mandate, the Senate Committee on Army, led by its Chairman Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, on Tuesday visited the Headquarters of Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State.
In a statement issued by Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command, the visit was described as a critical oversight function to assess the implementation and utilization of funds appropriated to the Nigerian Army, in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the operational guidelines of the National Assembly.

Addressing troops and commanders during the visit, Senator Yar’adua commended the gallant efforts and sacrifices of personnel under Operation HADIN KAI in countering terrorism and safeguarding national unity. He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to national security and improving the welfare of Nigeria’s armed forces.
“This visit is not only a constitutional duty but also a reaffirmation of our appreciation for the dedication and patriotism of our troops. We acknowledge your sacrifices and assure you of our continued legislative support,” Senator Yar’adua stated.
He assured that recommendations presented during the briefing would be relayed to relevant authorities and that the committee remains committed to ensuring adequate funding for operational efficiency, infrastructure, and improved welfare for troops.
In his welcome remarks, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described the oversight visit as both symbolic and strategic, highlighting the Senate’s unwavering concern for the success and well-being of troops engaged in the North East counter-insurgency operations.
“Your presence here today is a clear testament to your understanding of the operational challenges we face and your willingness to engage directly with us on the ground,” General Abubakar noted.
He added that the visit offered a valuable opportunity for the command to present its operational progress, achievements, ongoing challenges, and areas in need of urgent intervention. He further reaffirmed the commitment of troops to remain professional, resolute, and mission-focused in achieving the ultimate defeat of terrorism and restoring enduring peace to the region.
