The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has relaunched its Annual Lecture Series, positioning it as a platform not just for asking tough questions about Nigeria’s road safety challenges but for charting actionable solutions toward safer highways and a saner motoring culture.
First introduced in the late 2000s under the leadership of former Corps Marshal Osita Chidoka, the lecture series has long served as a forum where policymakers, academics, transport operators, and citizens engage in dialogue on road safety. This year, under the leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, the series has been revitalized and reimagined to address persistent road crashes and emerging global transportation trends.
The 2025 edition, held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, featured a keynote lecture titled “Road Safety Management and Emerging Transportation Trends: Global Partnership for Optimal Performance” delivered by Mr. Saul Billingsley, Executive Director of the FIA Foundation. The event also hosted a high-level panel session moderated by Chidoka, with contributions from the Chief of Defense Staff, the President of the Court of Appeal, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered a special address, underscoring the Federal Government’s recognition of road safety as central to national development.
Corps Marshal Mohammed highlighted FRSC’s embrace of technology-driven operations, including the digitization of driver’s license processes, deployment of body cameras for patrol officers, crash prediction through data analytics, and integration of the National Vehicle Identification System (NVIS). These innovations, he said, have already delivered faster rescue responses, smarter traffic management, and more transparent enforcement.
The Corps noted that while previous lecture editions inspired critical conversations, the 2025 program marks a shift from questions to solutions, aligning academic insight with policy action to deliver practical outcomes for all road users.
“The rejigged Annual Lecture is not just an event; it is a statement,” said Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide,FRSC Corps Public Education Officer. “It affirms FRSC’s role as a reformer and thought leader, turning dialogue into policy and policy into impact.”
