Prominent activist Deji Adeyanju has raised concerns over what he describes as a coordinated online attack by supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, popularly known as the “Obidients.” According to Adeyanju, these supporters mass-reported the Facebook page of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, leading to its suspension.
Adeyanju condemned the development, calling it undemocratic and a deliberate attempt to suppress dissenting views. “It is disappointing that Peter Obi’s supporters ganged up to report Sowore’s page simply because he continues to speak hard truths about their preferred candidate,” he said.
He accused the Obidient movement of attempting to silence critics rather than engaging in constructive dialogue. “If we truly want a better Nigeria, we cannot build it by muting opposing voices,” he added.
In a broader criticism of Peter Obi’s record, Adeyanju pointed to unresolved issues during his tenure as governor of Anambra State, including prolonged doctors’ strikes, setbacks in the education sector, and the failure to conduct local government elections. He also referenced the unaddressed killings of MASSOB members during that period.
“Peter Obi is no saint,” Adeyanju insisted, criticizing what he described as a pattern of political inconsistency, noting Obi’s movement from APGA to the PDP, and then to the Labour Party. “His political journey lacks ideological clarity. The same PDP he once championed is one he now criticizes.”
He maintained that Sowore’s activism has always been rooted in truth and justice and warned against turning political movements into cult-like followings. “These attacks, supported and sanctioned by Peter Obi himself, are part of a broader strategy to whitewash his image. But Nigeria needs truth and accountability not propaganda.”
Adeyanju concluded with a call for tolerance and free expression. “No one hates Peter Obi. What we reject is the culture of deception. Politics must remain open to scrutiny.”
