Abuja, Nigeria | February 16, 2026
Nigeria’s sports sector is witnessing an unprecedented transformation.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, has commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership and proactive support, which have propelled the nation’s sporting ambitions to new heights within a remarkably short period.

According to a statement released by Tony Nezianya, the committee’s Public Relations Officer, Engr. Gumel praised the President for recognising the socio-economic potential of sports and for appointing a focused and competent leadership team at the National Sports Commission (NSC).

“On behalf of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, I wish to express our profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his proactive approach to sports development. The timely release of funds has been a game-changer, enabling the leadership to achieve milestones previously thought impossible,” Gumel said.

Strategic Leadership Drives Results
Engr. Gumel highlighted the appointments of Mallam Shehu Dikko as NSC Chairman and Hon. Bukola Olopade as Director-General as pivotal to the sector’s success.

“The nation is witnessing a paradigm shift in sports administration. Their recent presentations before the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Sports during the budget defence showcased their progressive ideas and dedication to Nigeria’s sporting goals,” he added.
Tangible Achievements

The results under this renewed leadership are already visible:
373 medals won in international competitions
₦50 billion in private sector investment secured
Over 140,000 jobs created through sports-related initiatives
“The combination of timely funding and progressive structural reforms is not just producing medals; it is building a sustainable sports economy that contributes to Nigeria’s GDP,” said Gumel.

Why This Matters
Sports in Nigeria is increasingly becoming more than just competition it is a growing economic pillar and a platform for youth empowerment.
With strategic appointments, proper governance, and timely funding, Nigeria has demonstrated that it is possible to achieve rapid international success while creating jobs and boosting the national economy.

Sustaining this momentum could see Nigeria emerging as a continental sports powerhouse, inspiring the next generation of athletes, administrators, and investors.
