The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has released an official guideline outlining the proper protocol for rendering the National Anthem and National Pledge at official functions across the country.
According to the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the directive aligns with established national standards and seeks to promote uniformity, respect, and decorum during the performance of Nigeria’s national symbols.
He explained that, in line with the approved national protocol, only the first stanza of the National Anthem should be sung at official events. The third stanza, which is recognized as the National Prayer, is to be recited at the beginning of events.
Issa-Onilu further clarified that all three stanzas of the anthem are reserved for major national ceremonies, including Independence Day celebrations, Presidential Inaugurations, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy Day (June 12), and the Inauguration of the National Assembly, among others.
He also emphasized that the National Pledge should always be recited at the end of an event, as a reaffirmation of citizens’ loyalty and commitment to the nation.
“The National Orientation Agency continues to promote respect for Nigeria’s national symbols and adherence to the proper use of the anthem and pledge,” Issa-Onilu stated. “This is part of our ongoing effort to deepen patriotism, national pride, and unity among citizens.”
The NOA urged public institutions, event organizers, and citizens to adhere strictly to the approved protocol to ensure consistency and preserve the dignity of Nigeria’s national identity.
