The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised concerns over changing weather conditions across the country, warning of increasing dust haze in the North and North Central regions and intermittent thunderstorms in southern states.
According to NiMet’s latest outlook, released Sunday, dust haze is expected on Monday, February 23, reducing horizontal visibility to between 2 and 5 kilometres in northern and central areas.
The southern region, including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, is expected to experience a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine and a chance of morning and afternoon thunderstorms.

NiMet highlighted health risks linked to dust exposure, particularly for people with asthma or respiratory conditions. The agency advised:
“People with asthmatic health conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the weather condition.”
Motorists are urged to exercise extra caution during rain and low-visibility periods, while airline operators are advised to consult airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight operations.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s official channels, including their website www.nimet.gov.ng, to monitor ongoing weather developments.
The agency also noted that dust haze is expected to intensify by Wednesday, February 25, while southern states will continue to see intermittent thunderstorms with light rains.
Why This Matters
Weather changes can affect daily commuting, aviation, and public health. Staying informed helps prevent accidents, manage travel plans, and reduce health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
