The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has announced the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force, marking a significant milestone in the regional fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other security challenges.
Speaking at the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja on Tuesday, Badaru emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among member states to address emerging threats such as organized crime, climate change, cybercrime, and pandemics. His remarks were contained in a statement signed by Iyogun Sunday, representing the Director of Information and Public Relations.
A Call for Collective Security Efforts
The Minister highlighted the complex security landscape in West Africa, noting that the rise of global populism and revisionist ideologies has further exposed the region to vulnerabilities. He stressed the urgent need for a unified and proactive approach to tackling insecurity, asserting that economic growth and sustainable peace are deeply interconnected.
“The imperative for us in the sub-region to strengthen our bond and collective resolve is greater now than ever,” Badaru stated. “We must recognize that our strength lies in unity. It is essential that we close ranks against these threats and refocus our strategy to deny terrorism and insecurity a breeding ground.”
Focus on Regional Security Priorities
The meeting’s agenda includes key discussions on:
The ECOWAS Standby Force, which plays a crucial role in regional peacekeeping and rapid response operations.
Peace Support Operations, aimed at stabilizing conflict-affected areas.
Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea, a region increasingly targeted by piracy and illicit activities.

The Minister expressed confidence that the deliberations would lead to innovative and sustainable strategies to enhance security across the sub-region.
Acknowledging Defence Chiefs’ Dedication
Badaru commended the ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff for their commitment and professionalism in safeguarding the region. He urged all participants to engage in the discussions with a sense of purpose and unity, recognizing that their collective efforts are crucial in shaping a more secure and prosperous West Africa.
The activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force signals a renewed commitment to regional stability, security, and cooperative defense strategies, reinforcing ECOWAS’ determination to confront evolving security threats head-on.
