The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (Army), Major General Gold Chibuisi, has emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the media to better inform and educate the public about military operations and initiatives.
Speaking at a roundtable discussion with members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) in Abuja, Maj. Gen. Chibuisi described the media as a vital partner in promoting the army’s kinetic and non-kinetic efforts. He noted that platforms like the roundtable are part of the army’s broader strategy to maintain open communication channels with journalists and the public.
“The role you play in covering our programs is crucial. It is important that you understand our operations to accurately reflect our activities,” Chibuisi said. “Through your reporting, we also gain valuable feedback on the impact of our programs, activities, and operations. This is a truly symbiotic relationship.”
He expressed gratitude to the media for their ongoing support and called for even stronger ties moving forward.
Chibuisi also stressed the importance of nurturing a harmonious relationship between the military and civilians, emphasizing that the army belongs to the people, not against them. “Every soldier you see comes from a family and a community in Nigeria. It is critical for Nigerians to understand that the army is here to serve and protect them,” he added.
In his remarks, the President of DECAN, Ismail Musa, reiterated the association’s commitment to fostering a robust military-media partnership, noting that such collaboration is crucial in the fight against terrorism, crime, and other security threats.
“Through accurate, investigative, and balanced reporting, we aim to enhance public understanding, promote national security, and highlight the daily sacrifices made by our gallant troops,” Musa stated. He pledged DECAN’s continued engagement with the Ministry of Defence, the armed forces, and the Office of the National Security Adviser to ensure responsible security reporting.
Earlier, during a briefing on the Department of Civil-Military Affairs (DCMA), Lieutenant Colonel Muhammed Sani, Assistant Director of Administration, highlighted the department’s achievements. He noted that the Nigerian Army had implemented several quick-impact and special intervention projects across the country to strengthen civil-military relations.
Sani explained that the DCMA, established in 2010, serves as a bridge between the army and civilian communities, reinforcing the army’s commitment to national development and mutual understanding.
