The Nigerian Army has officially renamed the Ikeja Cantonment after the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, in recognition of his legacy. The renaming coincided with his 57th posthumous birthday, marking a solemn yet celebratory tribute to his service and dedication.
The newly named T.A. Lagbaja Cantonment underwent significant facility upgrades, including an engraved portrait of the late General. The commemorative event drew high-ranking military officials, notably members of Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Course 39, Lagbaja’s course mates, who gathered to honour his memory.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a goodwill message, described the renaming as a fitting acknowledgment of Lagbaja’s courage, patriotism, and unwavering service to the nation.
“This cantonment has long stood as a symbol of courage, discipline, and fidelity. It has housed thousands of brave men and women who have defended Nigeria’s sovereignty in moments of triumph, resilience, and sacrifice,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
“Renaming it after Lieutenant General Lagbaja is a befitting tribute to a leader and officer who embodied these values. He played key roles in counter-insurgency operations, internal security, and peacekeeping missions. By honouring his name, we reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to celebrating our heroes—not just in times of war but also in peace.”
The governor lauded President Bola Tinubu for approving the renaming, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to supporting the Armed Forces. He also reassured security agencies of his government’s commitment to infrastructure development and welfare support to enhance security operations in Lagos. Addressing the late General’s widow, Mrs. Mariam Lagbaja, Sanwo-Olu encouraged her to take pride in her husband’s legacy of professional service and sacrifice.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, highlighted the significance of immortalizing military leaders who have left an indelible mark on the Armed Forces.
“General Lagbaja exemplified honour, loyalty, and military professionalism. He was not just a fine officer but also a devoted husband, father, and friend. His leadership at the Ikeja Military Cantonment, particularly as the commander of Headquarters 9 Brigade, makes this renaming a fitting tribute to his enduring contributions,” Musa remarked.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, further noted that Lagbaja’s leadership and vision continue to impact soldiers and their families.
“True legacies are measured by their lasting impact. It is the tradition of the Nigerian Army to immortalize outstanding leaders by naming military installations after them, ensuring that their deeds are never forgotten,” he stated.
The renaming of the cantonment stands as a lasting testament to Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja’s sacrifice, dedication, and service to the Nigerian Army and the nation at large.
