In response to the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the commencement of emergency evacuation plans for its citizens stranded in both countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, reiterated Nigeria’s strong call for an immediate end to the violence. The government urged all parties to prioritize dialogue, adhere to international humanitarian law, and ensure the safety of civilians.
“The Government of Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law, and prioritize the protection of civilians,” the statement read.
Nigeria emphasized its unwavering support for peaceful conflict resolution and its long-standing commitment to regional and global peace and stability.
The crisis, now in its sixth day, has seen both nations engage in a series of retaliatory strikes. Civilian populations in affected areas are bearing the brunt of the violence. International media reports, including CNN, have confirmed that at least 224 people have been killed in Iran and 24 in Israel since the outbreak of fighting.
The Nigerian government said it is closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant authorities to ensure the safe evacuation and return of its nationals.
