Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation following a high-level diplomatic meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, received the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Annett Günther, in discussions centred on multilateral collaboration, economic partnerships, cultural heritage preservation, and institutional coordination.

This was contained in a statement signed by
Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja
24 February 2026

According to the statement, Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement with Germany, stressing the importance of continuous dialogue on matters of mutual interest. He assured that the Ministry remains open and ready to facilitate constructive exchanges aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

In her remarks, Ambassador Günther expressed Germany’s appreciation for the strong and evolving partnership with Nigeria. She referenced the successful Nigeria Germany Bi-National Commission held in November 2025 as a significant milestone that reinforced the strategic depth of relations between both countries.

A key focus of the meeting was cooperation within multilateral platforms, particularly reciprocal support for candidatures to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Ambassador Günther recalled the 2024 exchange of notes on mutual backing and thanked Nigeria for its support of Germany’s candidature.

She reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to multilateralism, global peace, and reforms within the United Nations system including stronger African representation in both permanent and non-permanent seats on the Security Council.

Germany, she noted, aligns with Nigeria’s advocacy for more equitable global governance structures and supports enhanced African participation in international decision-making.
The talks also addressed collaboration in infrastructure development, especially in the energy sector.

Ambassador Günther conveyed Germany’s continued interest in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to modernise its energy transmission and distribution systems, describing the sector as critical to Nigeria’s development agenda. She expressed optimism that administrative processes would soon be finalised to enable the implementation of key German-backed energy projects.

Responding, Ambassador Ahmed underscored the importance of coordinated diplomatic engagement on multilateral matters and assured that relevant departments within the Ministry would review outstanding documentation related to reciprocal arrangements. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s interest in advancing energy sector reforms, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable investment frameworks through strategic partnerships.

Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation. Germany signalled readiness to deepen capacity-building initiatives and collaborative frameworks aimed at promoting regional stability and addressing shared security challenges.

The meeting concluded with both countries restating their shared commitment to multilateralism, economic cooperation, cultural diplomacy, and institutional collaboration further reflecting the maturity and strategic depth of Nigeria Germany relations.
