The Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, on Wednesday, led a high-level delegation to meet with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in Abuja. The visit aimed to strengthen diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations, particularly in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
This engagement reflects the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Brazil, which dates back to Nigeria’s independence in 1960. The discussions are expected to culminate in the signing of key agreements to enhance collaboration.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the similarities between both countries, highlighting their large populations, strong economies, and deep cultural ties. He described the visit as a natural step in advancing their enduring partnership, further reinforced by President Bola Tinubu’s participation in the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil.
“We share a lot in common, from our size and economies to our population and culture. This visit is a natural progression of our partnership. We warmly welcome you and your delegation to Abuja,” Tuggar stated.

On his part, Minister Vieira recalled his previous engagements with Nigerian authorities, including meetings in Dubai in 2023 and discussions with President Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Addis Ababa in 2024. He extended an invitation to President Tinubu to visit Brazil and commended his role in the G20 discussions.
Vieira stressed the need for strategic communication between Nigeria and Brazil, particularly in education, trade, and cultural exchange. He also acknowledged the significant presence of Nigerians in Brazilian society, reinforcing the importance of stronger bilateral ties.
