The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to raising awareness about autism and mental health while fostering diversity, inclusion, and support for individuals with special needs.
General Musa made this statement during the unveiling of the world’s largest art canvas, an initiative led by young Nigerian artist Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke in commemoration of World Autism Day.
Supporting Creativity as a Tool for National Development
The CDS emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are open to supporting talents and initiatives that promote creative expression as a means of enhancing peace, security, and national development.
“This remarkable feat is not just a testament to the extraordinary artistic talent of our 15-year-old son but also an attestation to the resilience and renewed hope of the Nigerian people,” General Musa stated. “On behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, we acknowledge the significance of Kanyeyachukwu’s advocacy and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.”
The CDS extended heartfelt congratulations to Kanyeyachukwu for his outstanding achievement, which has placed Nigeria on the global stage. He noted that the young artist’s Guinness World Record-breaking journey demonstrates that impossibility is merely a myth.
A Story of Resilience and Global Recognition
Kanyeyachukwu, despite the challenges associated with autism, has used art as a powerful medium to communicate and inspire. His abstract paintings, known for their intelligence and maturity, have reached embassies worldwide and earned him prestigious accolades.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria had the privilege of hosting the drawing of the 12,600-square-meter art canvas at the 176 Guards Battalion on November 28, 2024. Furthermore, General Musa personally engaged with Kanyeyachukwu and his team during their visit to the Defence Headquarters on March 7, 2025.
“My interaction with Kanyeyachukwu underscored the importance of prioritizing talent discovery and supporting gifted individuals with appropriate platforms to showcase their abilities,” the CDS remarked. “Such engagements align with my leadership philosophy, which is centered on a people-centric approach.”
Harnessing Talent for National Security and Development
General Musa highlighted the role of creativity in addressing contemporary security challenges, emphasizing the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.
“By nurturing and showcasing talents, we can win the hearts and minds of our people, encouraging them to engage in legitimate endeavors rather than resorting to crime and violence,” he stated. “Art is a unifying force that fosters peace, unity, and national identity—values that align with the Armed Forces’ quest for stability and cohesion.”
Recognizing Parental Support and Commitment
The CDS also commended Kanyeyachukwu’s parents for their unwavering support and dedication to nurturing their son’s talent.
“They have not only fostered his creative abilities but have also been pillars of strength in his journey to global recognition,” General Musa noted. “Their love, resilience, and commitment serve as an inspiring example of the role family plays in empowering individuals and driving societal progress.”
Reaffirming the Armed Forces’ commitment to inclusion, General Musa pledged continued support for initiatives that promote talent, determination, and innovation as integral elements of national development.
“The Defence Headquarters is proud to celebrate Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke. Our support and presence here symbolize our profound admiration for him and serve as encouragement for others who seek to embark on similar inspiring journeys,” he concluded.
