The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has recognized the excellence and commitment of 30 Nigerian referees by awarding them FIFA badges, a prestigious certification that grants them the authority to officiate international matches.
The ceremony, held at the NFF headquarters in Abuja, marked a significant milestone for Nigerian officiating, reaffirming the country’s growing influence in global football. The selected referees, drawn from various categories—including center referees and assistant referees in both male and female divisions—are now eligible to officiate matches organized by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Speaking at the event, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised the referees for their dedication and urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. “This recognition is not just an honor but also a responsibility. We expect you to represent Nigeria with excellence on the international stage,” he said.
The group includes 11 referees, 11 assistant referees, four futsal referees, and four beach soccer referees, all now eligible to officiate FIFA matches this year.
Among them, 22 are male and eight are female, specifically three of the referees and five assistant referees are female, while all futsal and beach soccer referees are male.
The referees expressed their gratitude, pledging to maintain fairness and uphold FIFA’s officiating principles. This achievement is expected to boost Nigeria’s presence in major tournaments and improve the country’s football officiating standards.
The NFF continues to invest in referee development, ensuring that Nigerian officials meet global standards and contribute significantly to the game at all levels.
