In a landmark effort to fast-track Nigeria’s digital development, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has hosted a strategic meeting with the Board of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), signaling a strengthened partnership aimed at enhancing the nation’s internet infrastructure and broadband capacity.
The high-level session focused on accelerating the implementation of Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020–2025, which targets broadband speeds of at least 25 Mbps in urban areas and 10 Mbps in rural communities by 2025. Both the NCC and IXPN emphasized the critical role of improved internet connectivity and expanded local content in driving digital inclusion and national development.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging digital transformation as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation, and national competitiveness. The Commission also highlighted the strategic importance of expanding local internet exchange points to boost regional connectivity, reduce latency, and support faster, more reliable access to digital services.

IXPN Ramps Up Expansion Efforts with NCC Support
In line with the renewed collaboration, IXPN announced plans to establish additional Points of Presence (PoPs) across Nigeria, aiming to bolster internet capacity, improve service delivery, and reduce reliance on costly international bandwidth.
This network expansion is expected to lower internet costs, improve speed and reliability, and promote the hosting of local digital content—key drivers of economic growth, tech innovation, and broader digital participation.
The NCC-IXPN partnership also reflects a wider commitment to bridging Nigeria’s digital divide through coordinated infrastructure investments, public-private partnerships, and nationwide digital literacy initiatives.
By reinforcing Nigeria’s digital backbone, this initiative sets the stage for a more inclusive and resilient digital economy, positioning the country as a competitive destination for tech innovation, investment, and homegrown digital solutions.
