The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses deep concern over the disturbing rise of cyber-slavery incidents across parts of West Africa, which continue to endanger Nigerian citizens, particularly vulnerable youths.
This was disclosed in a statement signed on 28th April 2025 by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Abuja
It has come to the Ministry’s attention that many young Nigerians, including minors, are being deceitfully lured out of the country with promises of lucrative employment opportunities abroad particularly in cryptocurrency-related fields. Tragically, upon arrival, these individuals are trafficked and forced into sophisticated scam operations, compelled to work in criminal “call centers” often dubbed “419 cyber-scam factories.” Under harsh and inhumane conditions, they are coerced into sending thousands of fraudulent emails, text messages, and calls aimed at defrauding innocent victims worldwide.
Of particular note is a recent operation by the Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) in Accra, Ghana, which rescued and detained a number of Nigerian youths who had been enslaved and subjected to cybercrime activities under appalling conditions. This incident highlights the alarming extent of the exploitation, abuse, and human rights violations perpetrated through cyber-slavery and underlines the urgent need for coordinated efforts to dismantle these multibillion-dollar criminal networks.
In light of these developments, the Ministry strongly warns all Nigerians especially young people and their parents to exercise utmost vigilance regarding job offers that appear too good to be true, particularly those involving overseas travel, remote work, or cryptocurrency ventures. Nigerians are urged to thoroughly verify all employment opportunities through official channels and to immediately report any suspicious offers to the appropriate authorities for prompt investigation and action.
The Ministry assures the general public that the Federal Government is actively collaborating with regional partners, national law enforcement agencies, and international organizations to address this grave issue. Efforts are underway to rescue victims, dismantle trafficking networks, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the welfare, dignity, and security of all Nigerian citizens, both at home and abroad. We will continue to raise public awareness on emerging threats and reinforce measures to prevent further victimization.
