Abuja, Nigeria – The League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) has paid a courtesy visit to Engineer Tonya Dewey, former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Basin Authority, to formally inform him of his nomination for the prestigious Champion of Inclusion Award at the organization’s upcoming Annual Founders Day Conference.
The visit, led by Mrs.Irene Mngupado Awunah-Ikyegh, National President of NILOWV, was to seek Engr. Dewey’s consent to attend the conference and receive the award in recognition of his outstanding role in mentoring women and creating opportunities for their political and economic empowerment.
Mrs. Irene explained that the League, founded 29 years ago after the Beijing Conference, has grown into a nationwide advocacy platform with presence in all 36 states, 774 local governments, and down to polling units. According to her, Engr. Dewey’s nomination was informed by his lifelong commitment to gender inclusion.

“You have been a role model, mentor, and father figure to countless women. For you to inspire and guide women to this level of leadership means you are a true champion of inclusion. This award is our way of saying thank you for opening doors and creating an enabling environment for women to thrive,” Awunaike said.
The Founders Day Conference and Award Dinner, slated for October 8, 2025, in Abuja, will highlight the theme: “The Strength and Value of the Female Voice and Vote in Electoral Victory,” as part of NILOWV’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
