The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations that its personnel harassed and intimidated residents of Ochon community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State in connection with a land dispute with neighboring Alesi community in Ikom Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, Lt. Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, described the claims as false, malicious, and targeted at undermining the credibility of troops deployed in the area.
He explained that soldiers of the 245 Battalion are currently stationed in the region strictly for internal security operations to protect lives, secure key infrastructure, and maintain peace in line with constitutional provisions.
“Following renewed clashes between the Alesi and Ochon communities on September 19, troops responded swiftly to prevent escalation and restore normalcy across the affected areas,” Lt. Colonel Ayeni said.
Reaffirming the Army’s neutrality, he stressed that the Division has no stake in the ownership, control, or resolution of land disputes. “Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property,” the statement read.
The 82 Division also reassured residents of Cross River State of its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, urging community leaders to embrace lawful and peaceful approaches to resolving disputes.
The Army further appealed to the public to disregard misleading reports and continue supporting peace efforts. Citizens were encouraged to provide credible information on any security threats or possible misconduct by personnel through established reporting channels for immediate action.
