The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has hailed the life imprisonment of Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi as a significant milestone for justice and road safety enforcement in Nigeria.

The judgment was delivered on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, by the High Court of Lagos State, TBS Division, in Suit No. LD/24692C/2024.The State v. Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi.

The case stemmed from a fatal crash that claimed the life of an FRSC officer who was on lawful duty.

The incident occurred on November 16, 2023, at Orile-Iganmu, Lagos, during a routine traffic enforcement operation by an FRSC patrol team. Investigations showed that the defendant, while driving a 40-foot container truck at excessive speed, failed to exercise due caution and rammed into a stationary mini truck that had been flagged down for inspection.

The impact fatally injured Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant Ajomale, who was actively carrying out his official responsibilities at the time.

In its ruling, the Court described the driver’s actions as grossly negligent, reckless, and unlawful. It dismissed any suggestion that the crash was a mere accident and convicted him of involuntary manslaughter under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, sentencing him to life imprisonment.

Reacting to the judgment, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, mni, said the ruling sends a clear and uncompromising message to motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, that recklessness on Nigerian roads will attract severe consequences.

He stressed that when a life is lost due to negligence especially that of an officer on lawful duty the law must take its full course. He added that the Corps remains committed to pursuing justice for fallen officers and protecting innocent road users.

The Corps Marshal further stated that the FRSC would intensify enforcement, strengthen prosecution support, and deepen collaboration with stakeholders to curb dangerous driving.

He warned that drivers who flout traffic regulations and endanger lives should be prepared to face the full weight of the law, as the Corps continues to honour the memory of DCRMA Ajomale, whose sacrifice underscores the daily risks faced by road safety personnel in the line of duty.
