The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued critical updates following its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday, 3rd July 2025. The meeting focused on two key areas: the ongoing review of applications for political party registration and the publication of supplementary regulations and guidelines for the review of election results.
This was contained in a statement issued and signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee on Thursday, 3rd July 2025
According to the statement, the New Supplementary Guidelines for Review of Election Results are in line with the Electoral Act 2022, particularly the proviso to Section 65, INEC is empowered to review election declarations and returns that were not made voluntarily or were made in violation of the law, its regulations, and guidelines.
To ensure consistency and provide clarity on this provision, the Commission has released Supplementary No. 1 to the Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022. These supplementary guidelines establish clear procedures and timelines for the review of election results and are now available on INEC’s official website and other public platforms.
This move addresses various interpretations of Section 65 and affirms INEC’s commitment to transparency and adherence to the rule of law in the electoral process.
Update on Political Party Registration
INEC has continued to receive and process applications from associations seeking registration as political parties. As of Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, the total number of applications stands at 122, following the receipt of 12 additional applications since the initial announcement on Monday, 23rd June 2025.
The full list of applicants including names, acronyms, addresses, and interim Chairmen and Secretaries—has been published on INEC’s website and other public information platforms.
INEC reassures Nigerians that the processing of these applications is being conducted transparently and equitably, in strict accordance with the Electoral Act 2022 and the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.
However, the Commission notes that one association has already altered its leadership, following the defection of its interim Secretary to another group. INEC urges all applicant associations to ensure consistency in their proposed leadership and contact details to avoid delays in the processing of their applications.
