The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked media reports claiming it has recognized specific individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP). In an official statement released on Thursday, INEC clarified that it has not yet made any decision concerning the ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party.
The commission also addressed reports about the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that there have been no alterations to its official website regarding the party’s leadership.
INEC explained that the list of Labour Party National Officers currently displayed on its website was uploaded following a previous court order, which is separate from the recent Supreme Court judgment. Similarly, it affirmed that the name of the PDP National Secretary remains unchanged on the platform, neither removed nor reinstated.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, stressed that the commission is thoroughly reviewing the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Labour Party’s leadership dispute. He assured that INEC, as a law-abiding institution, would communicate its decision to the public “in due course,” adhering strictly to legal procedures.
The statement further aimed to dispel what INEC described as “false and misleading” information circulating in the media. The Labour Party has been entangled in internal leadership struggles, with the recent Supreme Court verdict expected to influence the party’s hierarchy. INEC’s measured approach underscores its commitment to following due process before making any official declarations on the matter.
