According to the statement the virtual event, accessible via https://bit.ly/4hE10Gy, will hold on Monday, November 3, 2025, and aims to foster meaningful dialogue and collective action to safeguard women in media from gender-based violence, harassment, and digital abuse.
The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (IDEI), proclaimed by UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, serves as an annual reminder of the urgent need to protect journalists and ensure justice for crimes committed against them.
During the session, IPC will present key highlights from its latest publication, “The Unseen Enablers”, alongside a data-driven analysis of trends in attacks on women journalists between 2020 and 2025.
In a statement, the Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, emphasized that the 2025 IDEI theme “Chat GBV: Raising Awareness on AI-facilitated Gender-Based Violence Against Women Journalists” is a powerful call to action to end impunity and strengthen protections for female journalists.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to attacks against journalists. The safety of journalists and media actors must remain a top priority. We strongly oppose any action, law, or pressure that undermines press freedom. Intimidation and violence against journalists in Nigeria must stop if democracy is to thrive,”
Mr. Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director, IPC.
The Twitter (X) Space will feature a distinguished panel of media and gender advocates, including:
Anikeade Funke-Treasure – IPC Board Member and Executive Director, Illuminate Nigeria
Ladi Bala – Former Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ)
Ify Onyegbule – Director General, Imo Broadcasting Corporation
Jadesola Ajibola – Executive Director, Gender Alive Foundation
The conversation will explore practical measures, advocacy strategies, and institutional responses to safeguard women journalists in Nigeria’s media landscape and beyond.
