After months of delay, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have received fresh assurances from the Federal Government regarding the payment of the backlog of their newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance.
The Federal Government had announced an increase in corps members’ monthly stipend from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 in September 2024. However, despite repeated commitments, the implementation of the new allowance has faced setbacks, sparking concerns and frustration among serving corps members.
In a recent interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to clearing the arrears. He assured that all serving corps members, including those in the scheme when the increment was announced, would receive backdated payments.
“You saw the new DG saying that you will get it, and they’re asking him a question, ‘What about those who are exiting the program will they receive the backlog?’ He said we have your details,” the minister explained.
While Olawande did not provide a specific timeline for the payment, he reassured corps members that the government was actively working on settling the backlog. “The backlog, we will work on it and make sure it is paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen,” he stated.
The assurance brings renewed hope to thousands of corps members who have been awaiting the full implementation of the new allowance, as the government moves to fulfill its promise.
