Abuja, June 30, 2025 — The Federal Ministry of Education has expressed concern over the ongoing dispute involving the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, following the communiqué issued at the Union’s Emergency State Wing Standing Committee (SWSC) meeting held on March 22, 2025, in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
In a statement released on Monday 30th June 2025, signed by Boriowo Folasade Director, Press and Public Relations Federal Ministry of Education , the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, acknowledged the grievances raised by the Union regarding the implementation of the New National Minimum Wage for primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory.
While noting that the administration of LEA primary schools in the FCT falls under the jurisdiction of the six Area Councils and their respective Local Education Authorities (LEAs), Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, dignity, and professional development of teachers at all levels.
“The dedication of Nigerian teachers remains the bedrock of our basic education system. Their concerns are valid and must be addressed with urgency, fairness, and respect,” the Minister said.

The Ministry disclosed that it is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders including the Honorable Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, CON; the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC); and other key agencies to find a lasting resolution. It also urged the Area Council Chairmen to intensify efforts to engage constructively with the Union.
In line with the principles of cooperative governance and shared responsibility, the Ministry emphasized that it will continue to mediate and foster dialogue among stakeholders to avoid any disruption in the academic calendar of pupils across the territory.
“This is a critical moment for our basic education system. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are implementing reforms in infrastructure, digital learning, curriculum modernization, and teacher capacity development. These national strides must be matched with equitable attention to teachers’ welfare,” the Minister added.
The Ministry called on all parties NUT, Area Councils, and education administrators to approach the situation with transparency, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.
