Nigerian journalist Collins David Ajibola shares his recent journey through Beijing and Hunan Province his first-ever trip to China. What he found was not only culture and beauty but a compelling vision for the future.

In July 2025, I embarked on a transformative journey to China my first time visiting this rapidly advancing country. My visit to Beijing and Hunan Province wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was a learning experience that gave me a glimpse into the future.
First Impressions: Stepping Into the Future
Arriving at Beijing International Airport, I was immediately struck by the clean and vibrant atmosphere of the city. The hot summer weather added a fresh edge to the air as I stepped out of the plane, marking the start of a remarkable journey. From this moment on, I knew I was in a country that was not only proud of its history but also boldly embracing its future.
Surprises and Insights
The discipline, orderliness, and cleanliness of China were beyond anything I had imagined. There is a profound sense of patriotism among the Chinese, with nationalism reflected in the daily lives of its citizens. Their commitment to maintaining a high standard of living was evident in everything I saw. It was eye-opening and inspiring.

Accommodation & Travel: A Comfortable Experience
China’s hospitality is world-class. The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and well-standardized—nothing less than what one would expect from a country leading the world in infrastructure development. My entire experience was beautiful and exciting, filled with warmth and enthusiasm.
Cultural & Linguistic Challenges
As an African, I encountered a cultural shock in many aspects food, dance, and even the language barrier. Communicating was tough, especially when venturing out alone. However, the friendly and accommodating locals made my stay easier. The desire to learn Mandarin now lingers, and I’m determined to overcome the language challenge for future visits.
A Taste of Chinese Cuisine
One of the highlights of my trip was trying the famous Steamed Fish Head with Diced Hot Red Peppers, a signature dish of Hunan. The flavors were spicy, savory, and the fish head tender—an unforgettable culinary experience!
Cultural Events and Local Interaction
I was fortunate enough to experience the Hunan Summer Rural Cultural Tourism Festival, a vibrant celebration of local culture. Despite the language barrier, the Chinese people were extremely welcoming, making my interaction with them very positive. Their willingness to assist and engage made my experience even more enriching.
Lessons Learned
The key lesson from my trip was the importance of having a vision and sticking to it, much like China’s steady growth. The trip also reinforced the need for stronger partnerships between China and Africa, as there is much to learn from China’s approach to development.
A Glimpse into Africa’s Future

This trip has made me realize how much Africa can learn from China. Strengthening the relationship between China and Africa is vital for the continent’s future progress.
Final Thoughts
Would I recommend visiting China? Absolutely! It’s a trip that offers both personal growth and insights into a nation that is shaping the future.
