Under the dynamic leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is undergoing a strategic transformation aimed at reducing road accidents and promoting a culture of safety across Nigeria’s highways.
Appointed in May 2024 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Corps Marshal Mohammed has brought a reformist vision to the FRSC, aligning his leadership with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. His administration has introduced bold policies and reforms designed to reposition the Corps for optimal performance.
Strategic repositioning and operational excellence
One of the Marshal’s first moves was the strategic redeployment of five top-ranking officers to critical command positions, a decision aimed at boosting efficiency, accountability, and coordination across FRSC formations nationwide.
His leadership blueprint revolves around three key pillars:
Strategic planning to significantly reduce road crashes and fatalities.
Public awareness campaigns focused on responsible driving and road safety education.
Operational efficiency to improve enforcement, response time, and service delivery.
Embracing innovation and partnerships
In a notable shift, the FRSC under Mohammed has embraced innovation, including digital transformation initiatives. A landmark achievement was the introduction of the FRSC Mobile App, a tool that has modernized operations and facilitated real-time road safety monitoring across the country.
To expand public engagement, the Corps also partnered with unconventional platforms including online gaming networks to promote road safety awareness among youth and digital audiences.
Recognition and awards
These impactful reforms have earned the FRSC both national and international accolades. Notable recognitions include:
Kofi Annan Road Safety Award for digital innovations that strengthened road safety in Africa.
2024 SERVICOM Award as the most innovative parastatal in ease of doing business and public service.
Most Supportive CEO Award presented to Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed for championing service excellence.
Special Recognition Award for achieving over 75% in national performance evaluations.
Furthermore, the FRSC recently achieved a major diplomatic milestone as Nigeria was selected to host the permanent Secretariat of the African Lead Road Safety Management Agency in Lusaka, underlining the country’s leadership in continental road safety strategy.
Challenges and the way forward
Despite these strides, the Corps continues to face challenges, including infrastructure gaps and enforcement constraints. Nevertheless, Corps Marshal Mohammed’s strategic vision and results-oriented leadership provide a strong foundation for overcoming these obstacles.
As the FRSC pushes forward with its reform agenda, the Corps remains committed to the goals of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) 2021–2030, which targets a 50% reduction in road traffic fatalities by 2030.
A call for collective responsibility
While strong leadership is critical, Corps Marshal Mohammed emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility. He calls on all stakeholders government agencies, civil society, motorists, and pedestrians to work together in creating safer roads.
“Everyone has a role to play in saving lives. Obey traffic rules, maintain your vehicles, and report unsafe conditions. Together, we can reduce road crashes and build a culture of responsibility on our highways,” he said.
As the FRSC evolves under Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed’s stewardship, Nigeria is witnessing a renewed commitment to saving lives and ensuring that every journey counts safely.
