By Ameh Gabriel
The Nigeria Education Group (NEG), under the leadership of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has launched an ambitious series of reforms designed to revitalize the nation’s education sector and enhance learning outcomes across Nigeria. The announcement was made during a high-level strategic meeting chaired by Dr. Alausa, which brought together key stakeholders to align priorities and foster cross-sector collaboration for sustainable educational development.
Strategic Alignment with NESRI for National Unity
Dr. Alausa applauded the synchronization of NEG meetings with the National Economic and Social Research Institute (NESRI), emphasizing that this strategic partnership is vital for strengthening national unity through inclusive education reforms. “We are ushering in a new era for education in Nigeria, creating a system that empowers every learner and supports national development,” Dr. Alausa declared during the meeting.
Innovation and Inclusivity at the Core of Reforms
The reform agenda focuses on innovation, inclusivity, and enhanced coordination between educational institutions and governmental agencies. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abel Olumiyiwa Enitan, underscored the importance of adopting global best practices in education, particularly in Private Schools Education (PSE). He stressed the need to consider critical factors like location, timing, and the broader purpose of education to shape a prosperous future for Nigeria’s younger generation.
Human Rights and Social Responsibility in Education

The role of human rights and social responsibility in shaping educational policies also featured prominently in the discussions. Stakeholders acknowledged the influence of societal values on the education landscape and the well-being of students, pledging to integrate these principles into the reformation process.
Progress in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
A major highlight of the meeting was the progress report from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Committee, which was established in collaboration with UNESCO, the Ministry of Youth Development, and other partners. To date, 1,061 individuals have been trained under the program, with plans for further expansion aimed at enhancing technical skills and boosting employability across Nigeria.
UNESCO’s representative and co-chair of the TVET Committee, Mr. Manish Joshi, commended the cooperation between the National Councils on Education, NESRI, and other key partners. He stressed the importance of civic responsibility and stakeholder synergy to achieve unified educational goals.
Milestone for Nigeria’s Education Agenda
The National Education Group meeting marked a significant milestone in aligning Nigeria’s educational priorities. Major subcommittees presented progress reports highlighting key focus areas, including:
- Data Digitalization: Modernizing record-keeping and information management for transparency and accessibility.
- Out-of-School Initiatives: Strategic plans to reintegrate out-of-school children into the education system.
- Quality Education: Enhancing curriculum standards to match global best practices.
- Teacher Training: Strengthening teacher capacity to deliver quality education.
