The military task force, Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), has confirmed the death of eight vigilantes in a deadly ambush by armed bandits in Odare Forest, Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In an official statement released Wednesday from its headquarters in Jos, OPSH dismissed earlier claims suggesting that as many as 70 people were killed, clarifying that eight vigilante members lost their lives during the ill-fated operation, while several others remain missing.
According to OPSH, the vigilantes who had mobilized from Kanam LGA did not notify or seek clearance from the military before embarking on the mission. The task force noted that the group reportedly stopped in the Kukawa community for “administrative arrangements,” during which tensions escalated. Witnesses allege the vigilantes clashed with locals, looted shops, and seized over 20 motorcycles under unclear circumstances.
While advancing toward Odare Forest, the group was ambushed by armed assailants, leading to multiple casualties and missing persons.
Following the incident, troops from OPSH Sector 2, based in Wase, have launched a search and rescue operation to locate the missing vigilantes.
The military emphasized the importance of coordination, warning that unauthorized security operations by local groups not only endanger their members but also put civilians at risk and undermine broader counter-insurgency efforts.
“We commend the bravery and commitment of community-based security groups. However, all operations must be carried out in coordination with OPSH and other security agencies to ensure effectiveness and safety,” the statement read.
OPSH reaffirmed its dedication to restoring peace and stability in Plateau State and urged residents to support ongoing efforts by sharing credible intelligence and reporting any suspicious activity.
