PORT HARCOURT – The 115 Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), based in Port Harcourt, has received high commendation from the Directorate of Media Operations at Defense Headquarters (DHQ) for its decisive and sustained role in tackling oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and criminal activity across the Niger Delta region.
The commendation was delivered during an operational briefing presented by Navy Commander G. Egbunu, Staff Officer Grade 1, Media Operations, who represented the Director of Media Operations, Major General M.G. Kangye.
At the center of the unit’s growing recognition is Group Captain Abdulafeez Opaleye, Commander of the 115 Operations Group. His visionary leadership, tactical acumen, and unwavering commitment have revitalized the group, positioning it as one of the Nigerian Air Force’s most effective combat and surveillance units.
Nicknamed the “Home of Combat Helicopters,” the 115 Operations Group serves as the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) tasked with safeguarding strategic oil infrastructure and supporting ground forces in internal security operations. The unit consistently executes complex air missions, including Close Air Support (CAS), Armed Escort, Air Interdiction, Combat Air Patrols, and Casualty Evacuation.
Providing an update on the unit’s operational assets, Flight Lieutenant I.H. Adamu (SO1 Ops, 150 Wing) noted the availability of EC-135 helicopters for light combat and liaison roles, as well as T-129 ATAK helicopters for offensive operations. He also revealed ongoing efforts to reactivate a Mi-35P gunship, which will substantially boost the group’s combat capabilities. For enhanced surveillance and reconnaissance, ISR platforms and UAVs are deployed as needed from NAF Headquarters.
Between January 25 and the present, the 115 Operations Group has flown 172 missions, totaling 268 hours and 40 minutes of flight time, and expended 87,938 liters of Jet A1 fuel. These missions have led to the destruction of 49 illegal cooking sites, 16 boats, and 20 large storage reservoirs, severely disrupting the operations of oil thieves and economic saboteurs.
A notable operation was the precision airstrike on March 27 at Egbema Ohaji, which dismantled a major illegal refinery hub, forcing criminal networks to flee or abandon their illicit camps deep within the creeks.
In addition to its aerial campaign, the 115 Operations Group has effectively deployed personnel for joint internal security operations alongside other security agencies, helping to stabilize flashpoints and dismantle organized crime cells.
Group Captain Opaleye’s leadership style characterized by strategic foresight, calm discipline, and inspirational command—has earned widespread respect within the ranks. His ability to integrate aerial intelligence with real-time ground response has been pivotal to the success of counter-crude oil theft operations and broader internal security engagements.
The operational briefing not only highlighted the unit’s high level of preparedness and firepower but also underscored the courage, professionalism, and sacrifices of Nigerian Air Force personnel committed to national security.
As the 115 Operations Group continues to fly with precision and strike with purpose, it stands as a shining example of military excellence powered by dedication, innovation, and the exceptional leadership of Group Captain Abdulafeez Opaleye.
