The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the promotion of 2,339 staff members as part of its 2025 Senior Staff Promotion Exercise.

The decision was taken at the Commission’s meeting held on February 26, 2026, in what officials describe as a move to strengthen administrative efficiency and reinforce leadership capacity ahead of future electoral activities. At the Directorate level (Grade Levels 16–17), 45 Deputy Directors were elevated to the rank of Directors.

According to the Commission, 18 of the newly promoted Directors will remain in active service, while 27 are expected to retire shortly after their promotion in line with public service regulations. In the Grade Levels 15–16 category, 91 Assistant Directors were promoted to Deputy Directors. Additionally, 82 Chief Officers on Grade Levels 14–15 were advanced to the rank of Assistant Directors.

The exercise also covered 2,121 intermediate officers on Grade Levels 07-13 across various departments, reflecting what the Commission described as broad-based career progression across multiple cadres.

INEC stated that the promotion process adhered strictly to established guidelines and extant public service rules to ensure merit, transparency and fairness. The Commission said the exercise demonstrates its commitment to rewarding competence and years of service, while sustaining institutional memory and leadership continuity within its structure.

It added that the strengthened workforce will support the delivery of credible, transparent and efficient electoral processes nationwide.INEC congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to uphold professionalism, integrity and impartiality in the discharge of their responsibilities.
