The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has strongly criticized the United States over its recent tariff policies, describing them not as a conventional trade war but as a “war imposed by the US on the rest of the world.”
Speaking during an interactive session with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, Ambassador Dunhai condemned the unilateral trade measures recently imposed by Washington, warning of the broader consequences for global economic stability.
“This is not just a trade war—it is a war imposed by the United States on the rest of the world,” the ambassador declared. “And appeasement is not the way out.”
He cautioned that attempts to placate the United States, particularly under the administration of former President Donald Trump, would only embolden Washington and escalate the crisis.
“No country will remain immune from the consequences of these tariffs,” he said. “The world must come together in defense of sovereignty and fairness. Allowing the bully to have his way is tantamount to surrendering sovereignty.”
The ambassador also warned that the aggressive tariff regime could plunge the global economy into a recession and isolate the United States further from the international community.
“The US is no longer the beacon of the world. If it continues down this path, it will only end up isolating itself,” he added.
On a more positive note, Ambassador Dunhai spoke about the strengthening relationship between China and Nigeria, highlighting that bilateral trade had exceeded $22 billion, making Nigeria one of China’s key trading partners in Africa.
He also reaffirmed China’s support for Nigeria’s economic modernization, pointing to financial and infrastructural cooperation through favorable loan agreements and policy instruments such as the Naira/Yuan currency swap.
“We believe financial cooperation beyond infrastructure is essential for mutual growth. The currency swap deal, which has now been extended, sets aside over $2 billion to facilitate smoother trade and shield both nations from volatile exchange rates,” he explained.
Ambassador Dunhai emphasized that China remains committed to Nigeria’s development and sees the partnership as a model for broader cooperation across Africa.
